Our Class Structure

At Stoke by Nayland C of E Primary School, our children are currently taught across three classes with highly desirable, small class sizes and have the same teacher for at least two years, which all bring about huge benefits.  Our teachers develop a deep understanding of each and every pupil, intrinsically knowing their strengths and areas to develop and most importantly - they view each child as a unique individual.  With excellent pedagogy of how children learn and with sound knowledge across the whole National Curriculum, our teachers are highly proficient at teaching multiple year groups within a class.

Knowing each child so well, puts our dedicated team of teachers and support staff in a much better position to assist and extend every child in the class and tailor learning for their individual needs.  In the subsequent year of being with the same teacher, pupils gain from having extra teaching time, as teachers do not need to spend the early weeks in the school year getting to know them.  Pupils feel much more comfortable returning to school in September and are quickly ready to engage, learn and excel.

Mixed year group classes also put children ahead socially and children benefit from learning in more flexible group arrangements.  Older children thrive on the opportunity to serve as mentors and take on leadership roles within the class setting, whilst younger children gain from exposure to more sophisticated problem solving approaches, wider ranges of vocabulary and having role models to aspire to.  Children have wide circles of friends and learn from a young age to mix with a range of children from different age groups, preparing them well for the vertical tutor groups at The Thomas Gainsbrough Secondary School.  Children cooperate with one another rather than compete with one other, so both self-esteem and independence flourish.

With a super support team of LSAs, children regularly break out into pure year groups for some learning, which includes but is not limited to spelling lessons and mental maths, ensuring that all of our children become the best that they can be.

We encourage you to come and see for yourself why Stoke by Nayland C of E Primary School is such a unique and special place.
